What our hearing aids consultation process involves
Step 1 – Comprehensive hearing assessment
Before any hearing aid is recommended, we carry out a full diagnostic assessment to understand your specific pattern of hearing loss, your listening lifestyle, and what you need from your hearing aids. This shapes everything that follows.
Step 2 – Independent recommendation
We discuss the options that best match your hearing loss, lifestyle, and preferences, drawing from our full portfolio of leading manufacturers. This means that we recommend what’s best for you, and we are not tied down to one or two brands. There’s no pressure to decide immediately, and we’ll give you time to consider your options.
Step 3 – Trial period
We offer a trial period so you can experience how your recommended advanced hearing aids perform in your own daily environments – at home, at work, in restaurants, outdoors – before making a final decision.
Step 4 – Fitting with real-ear measurement
At your hearing aid fitting appointment, your advanced hearing aids are programmed to your audiogram prescription and then verified using real-ear measurement – a small probe microphone is placed in your ear canal that measures exactly how sound reaches your eardrum with the hearing aid in situ. This allows us to fine-tune the programming to your specific ear canal anatomy, not just a generic prescription. It’s the clinical gold standard for hearing aid fitting, and many providers don’t routinely carry it out.
Step 5 – Aural rehabilitation
Adjusting to advanced hearing aid technology takes time – your brain needs to relearn how to process sounds it hasn’t heard clearly for years. Our Hearing Optimisation Programme supports this acclimatisation process with structured guidance, realistic expectations, and regular check-ins.
Step 6 – Four years of follow-up care
Your care plan includes annual reviews, ongoing adjustments, servicing, and support from your audiologist throughout. Hearing changes over time, and your hearing aid programming will need to be updated too.

Hearing aid styles – finding the right fit for you
Hearing aids come in a range of styles, each with different benefits depending on your hearing loss, lifestyle, and personal preferences. We’ll discuss all the options at your consultation, but here’s a brief overview.
Receiver-in-Canal (RIC)/ Receiver-in-the-Ear (RITE)
The most commonly fitted style, involving a small device that sits behind the ear with a thin wire to a receiver placed in the ear canal. Discreet, comfortable, and suitable for a wide range of hearing losses. Most modern Bluetooth and rechargeable models are available in this style.
In-the-Ear (ITE) / In-the-Canal (ITC) / Completely-in-Canal (CIC)
Custom-moulded advanced hearing aids that sit entirely within the ear or ear canal. Increasingly discreet as you move from ITE to CIC.
Lyric – the invisible, extended-wear hearing aid
As a certified Lyric provider, The Hearing Clinic offers this unique extended-wear device that sits deep in the ear canal and is worn 24 hours a day – including during sleep and showering – for months at a time. It’s completely invisible from the outside and requires no daily handling. Lyric is priced on a subscription model, £125 per ear per month.
Behind-the-Ear (BTE)
A slightly larger device that sits fully behind the ear, connected to a custom earmould. Robust, powerful, and suitable for more significant hearing losses or people who prefer a larger device for ease of handling.
