Patient Stories

Real voices from our patients, sharing how better hearing has transformed their lives.

“I feel at ease in everyday situations.”

I had suffered from tinnitus for many years, and although a serious illness was ruled out, I increasingly found myself unable to fully engage in group conversations or hear clearly in crowded places where background noise was a significant problem. This struggle with hearing led me to seek professional help.

I had no fears or concerns, but I was sceptical about whether there could be any improvement. I had heard great things about The Hearing Clinic’s thorough testing, and I was eager to find answers swiftly, so I booked an appointment.

Upon my first visit, my apprehension was swiftly dispelled. The examinations were indeed thorough, and the staff took great care in explaining my condition, which made me feel as though I had turned a corner.

The impact on my life since addressing my hearing challenges has been amazing. I can now participate fully in conversations regardless of the setting, and background noise no longer troubles me. That feeling of isolation has vanished entirely!

A particularly memorable moment was when I first wore my hearing aids and realised I could clearly hear a group conversing on the other side of a narrow road.

To anyone visiting for the first time, my advice is to remain open-minded, ask questions, and listen carefully to the guidance and recommendations offered.

Since starting to wear hearing aids, I feel much more at ease in everyday situations, marking a significant transformation in my life.

“A life-changing experience.”

As a teacher, my journey with hearing challenges began when I found myself struggling to hear my students in the classroom. Conversations in noisy environments like pubs and restaurants also became increasingly difficult. This prompted me to seek professional advice.

Before visiting the clinic, I had my reservations. I was particularly concerned about the idea of wearing hearing aids, worrying they might be uncomfortable or disruptive to my active lifestyle. My initial consultation was with a well-known high street provider. However, despite the friendly service, I felt the clinician lacked confidence about their knowledge about hearing loss and the available solutions. This led me to seek a second opinion.

The moment I stepped into the clinic, I was greeted with warmth and friendliness. The reception team put me at ease right away. Bridgitte, who handled my care, explained the testing process with remarkable confidence. The thoroughness and detail of the testing far surpassed my previous experience. Bridgitte took the time to discuss various products and options with me. She inquired about my lifestyle, work, and hobbies and ensured the hearing aids complemented my specific needs. She even guided me on setting up the functions on the app and patiently answered all my questions.

The impact on my quality of life has been transformative. Wearing hearing aids has clarified sound, and I now feel confident in the classroom, hearing all my students clearly, which has positively transformed my work environment.

Surprisingly, my hearing aids function like little computers, with many settings accessible conveniently via a phone app. Contrary to my fears, the aids are so comfortable that my friends and colleagues didn’t notice them until I pointed them out.

I highly recommend Bridgitte and her team. For anyone considering visiting the clinic, don’t hesitate – reach out to them sooner rather than later. My transition to accepting my hearing loss and adapting to hearing aids has been seamless, thanks to the support and expert guidance I received.

It truly has been a life-changing experience.

“Relax and enjoy the experience!”

I first realised I had hearing challenges when participating in group conversations became increasingly difficult, especially if the person speaking was to my right.

This issue was particularly noticeable because I had been wearing a hearing aid in my right ear for several years due to a past episode of labyrinthitis. It was clear that something needed to change, prompting me to book an appointment.

I didn't have any fears or concerns before visiting The Hearing Clinic, as I was aware of the approximate costs involved; my belief was that if my hearing could be significantly improved, it would be worth the investment.

The decision to choose The Hearing Clinic was based on their stellar reviews and reputation for offering a comprehensive range of devices. My first impression was very positive. The reception was welcoming, and the audiologist was both relaxed and thorough. I was particularly impressed by the meticulous quality of the assessment, which allowed my hearing aids to be finely tuned to my specific needs.

With improved hearing, I'm now much more comfortable joining conversations in noisy environments, particularly with people on my right. This improvement has significantly enhanced my social interactions within important groups in my life.

For anyone visiting the clinic for the first time, I’d recommend that they relax and enjoy the experience, as it will likely enhance their quality of life. A memorable moment for me was realising how small and discreet modern hearing aids are, even being colour matched to my glasses!

I'd also like to extend my gratitude to Zhuqeelah for her excellent support and patience throughout the process – she was a huge help!

“Don’t be afraid! It can only benefit you!”

I first noticed a change in my hearing when conversations that took place at the front of the car while I sat in the back became muffled whispers. Even during a hospital visit, the doctor’s words seemed to fade away, forcing me to repeatedly ask for clarification, which was quite frustrating.

This pattern continued with friends, where I found myself frequently asking them to repeat themselves. It was these experiences that prompted me to book an appointment to get my hearing checked.

Despite my decision to seek help, I harboured a bit of anxiety about the prospect of using hearing aids, especially given my experience with tinnitus. I knew that hearing aids might actually provide some relief.

After a bad experience elsewhere, as I casually strolled past the clinic, I decided to pop in. It was one of the best decisions I could have made!

From the moment I stepped in, I received a warm welcome. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, offering clear explanations of how the appointments would proceed. This set the stage for a transformative journey with my hearing health.

The difference in my life post-treatment has been profound. With better hearing, I now navigate conversations without missing essential bits. I hear everything clearly and engage more fully with the world around me.

For anyone visiting the clinic for the first time, my advice is straightforward – don't be afraid; it can only benefit you.

One moment that stands out is when my hearing aids were first fitted. I was utterly astonished by the clarity and richness of sound around me. It was a powerful realisation of just how much I’d been missing from my everyday experiences.

Finally, a sincere word of appreciation for my audiologist, Angelique. Her personable, helpful, and patient approach made all the difference in my hearing journey.

“I am deeply grateful for the care and solution they provided.”

I have been retired for over a decade, but my hearing challenges began while I was still working. My role demanded regular attendance at networking events, and it was in these bustling environments that I began to struggle.

Background noise blurred my focus, and I often found myself guessing when to smile or nod in conversations, a challenge that crept into social events with friends as well. Once the pressure of work lifted, the realisation that I needed to address my hearing issues took hold, prompting me to book an appointment with The Hearing Clinic.

I wasn’t sure what to expect and felt a little apprehensive, but the warm and friendly environment at the clinic immediately put me at ease. From the receptionist's welcoming smile to the audiologist's thorough explanations at every stage, the experience was both reassuring and enlightening.

My choice to visit an independent specialist rather than a retail store was driven by a desire for targeted expertise. As my hearing challenges only surfaced in noisy environments, I sought a clinic capable of diagnosing the root cause and providing a comprehensive plan for management and treatment.

The clinic's professionalism exceeded my expectations. The audiologist's skill was clear as my hearing issues were traced back to an old head injury, shedding light on why my brain struggled to interpret sounds amid noise.

Stepping out of the clinic with my new aids was amazing; sounds I'd missed for so long flooded in! I remember going home with a smile on my face. These aids have significantly enhanced my confidence and enjoyment of social gatherings and everyday life.

For those considering a visit to the clinic, my advice is simple: Don't be nervous. The audiologists are there to help and advise with compassion and expertise.

A particularly memorable moment was the relief of uncovering why I struggled in noisy settings and learning that help was available. This realisation, and the support I received, has been incredibly uplifting.

My journey with The Hearing Clinic has been profoundly positive, and I am deeply grateful for the care and solution they provided. Thank you for all you have done for me.

“The team here is unfailingly welcoming and empathetic.”

Over two decades ago, I first noticed the signs of hearing impairment. Despite trying various NHS hearing aids, and later opting for pricier private alternatives, I found them to be ineffective.

This persistent struggle with my hearing led me to seek further assistance, and that's when I learned about this local hearing clinic, spurred on by positive reports from others.

Initially, there were some preconceived concerns and fears about what the experience might entail. However, upon my first visit, I encountered an environment that was both competent and professional, though I was aware that the effective services wouldn't come cheap.

Improved hearing has since markedly enhanced my quality of life. It's made a significant difference, particularly in business meetings where I now perform better, and I am less likely to be a source of annoyance to my family.

For anyone visiting the clinic for the first time, my advice would be to listen carefully to the guidance provided. It's essential to take in that information and apply it with diligence. You can’t expect immediate results – working with modern hearing technology does require understanding and effort. It’s a journey of learning to harness the best from these aids.

During my appointments, the most enlightening experience was realising the pivotal role of the brain in adapting to new auditory inputs from advanced hearing devices.

Reprogramming my brain to interpret these sounds needed practice, but like many athletes say, the more I practised, the better I got.

The team at The Hearing Clinic have consistently been welcoming, pleasant, and extremely helpful. Their empathetic nature stands out, as they ensure to listen thoroughly before making any recommendations, which I found truly beneficial.

“You’re made to feel like a person and not just a patient.”

As a child, my ears were always problematic, a condition that seemed to have followed me into adulthood. About 11 years ago, I noticed my tinnitus worsening, signalling it was time for a more thorough investigation.

Before my visit to The Hearing Clinic, I felt a sense of apprehension. Having recognised through many ENT consultations that my hearing was suboptimal, the prospect of needing hearing aids was daunting. It was a significant step for someone who had always managed to just get by.

After consulting a private surgeon who identified a disease in both ears, I sought a private ear specialist to address the tinnitus. This decision led me to Bridgitte, marking the start of an invaluable journey with her eleven years ago. I haven't looked back since.

From my initial appointment, Bridgitte impressed me with her exceptional knowledge, patience, and understanding. At The Hearing Clinic, I am always treated with professionalism and respect; here, you’re made to feel like a person and not just a patient.

Receiving hearing aids for the first time was a revelation – I hadn't realised how much of normal life I was missing until then! Conversations became clear, the TV's volume was reduced to sensible levels, and I no longer had to strain to hear on the phone. The struggle was lifted, and while the tinnitus persists occasionally, it's far less intrusive with the hearing aids.

For anyone considering their first visit, my advice is simple: Don’t be scared or embarrassed. Visiting could improve your quality of life beyond your expectations.

Throughout my time with The Hearing Clinic, I have undergone three mastoidectomy operations on my left ear. Despite these challenges, Bridgitte has continued to provide exceptional care. During regular checkups, she even took photos of my ear's healing process to share with my surgeon, ensuring comprehensive care between appointments.

I have to say a huge thank you to Bridgitte for her genuine kindness and professionalism over the past 11 years. My ears have not been the simplest to manage, but her support has given me a second chance at confidence in the social world. Thank you for being there and restoring the assurance I feared was lost.

“You won’t regret your decision.”

In 2010, I first encountered hearing loss at the age of 45. One morning, I awoke to find my left ear feeling blocked and unresponsive, akin to being deaf. Believing it to be a simple wax buildup, I arranged to have my ears syringed, but the procedure made no difference.

I was referred to an ENT consultant for more thorough investigations. After an MRI scan ruled out anything alarming, I was diagnosed with Meniere's disease. The consultant advised the use of noise-reducing earplugs, leading me to my first meeting with Bridgitte. Her detailed explanation of Meniere's disease left a lasting impression on me.

As the years passed, my hearing in the left ear continued to decline, prompting a realisation that action was necessary.

My initial attempts with an NHS hearing aid and later a trial with a pair from a High Street provider both failed to yield satisfactory results. This history left me apprehensive during my first visit to Bridgitte in 2019. Despite my willingness to wear hearing aids, I feared those unsatisfactory experiences were all I could expect.

Remembering Bridgitte's informative guidance from 2010, I decided to consult a private audiologist and returned to her care. The decision proved immensely rewarding; upon entering, I was struck by the clinic's calm and soothing environment, which immediately put me at ease.

The positive impact of improved hearing on my life has been enormous. Previously, I found myself withdrawing from group conversations due to the effort required to keep up, leading to feelings of isolation. Now I feel included, and my confidence has significantly improved, particularly when speaking with unfamiliar people.

Working in a primary school presented increasing challenges in the noisy classroom environment; while still demanding, the situation is now much more manageable. The ability to take phone calls through my hearing aids and receive sat nav instructions has been transformative.

One of the most remarkable changes has been in my enjoyment of music, both listening and playing. My left ear's severe hearing loss, contrasted with normal hearing in my right ear, meant I lost the stereo effect of music. The first time I listened to a favourite classical piece streamed directly to my hearing aids was an astonishing experience.

I advise anyone visiting for the first time to relax! Bridgitte's calming presence immediately dispels any anxiety, and you will never feel rushed during an appointment. You won’t regret your decision.

A standout moment was wearing hearing aids tailored specifically to my needs for the first time, which was an amazing experience.

I’d like to give a sincere thank you to Bridgitte for her unwavering support and expertise!

“I have never been made to feel awkward or uncomfortable here.”

About a decade ago, I began to suspect some hearing issues. It wasn't until a diagnosis of an unrelated inner ear problem, which affected the canals, that I faced the reality of my hearing loss.

This condition was not the cause of my hearing impairment, but it did lead the consultant to conduct several tests, resulting in a prescription for NHS-issued hearing aids. Unfortunately, these were cumbersome and uncomfortable, which led to infrequent use.

As my hearing deteriorated further, my wife's insistence on professional testing grew stronger. She believed that updated hearing aids would significantly improve both our lives.

The turning point for me came when the television volume reached uncomfortable heights, and I found myself frequently asking others to repeat themselves.

To be honest, I didn't select The Hearing Clinic myself – my wife did! She arranged the appointment and went with me to ensure I followed through. Her determination proved invaluable.

I held no fears about visiting a clinic, as I didn't expect any painful procedures. What I hadn't expected was the sophistication and thoroughness of the testing process.

My initial test took place at the Welwyn clinic, but I have since attended appointments at Hitchin. Both locations are impeccably maintained, with clean and welcoming environments. The entire staff, from receptionists to audiologists, are consummate professionals and exceptionally warm, creating an atmosphere where I felt at ease and cared for.

The impact of better hearing has been remarkable, both for me and my wife. The first time I wore my new hearing aids, I was astounded at the richness of sound I had been missing. The television volume is now at a comfortable level for everyone, and I no longer need to ask people to repeat themselves. A particularly modern convenience is the ability to adjust the hearing aids through my mobile phone.

For anyone visiting for the first time, my advice is simple: relax. There's nothing to fear. Every step of the process is clearly explained, and you'll find yourself in capable, reassuring hands. It's best to approach your appointment without preconceived notions.

The entirety of my experience with the clinic stands out as memorable. Throughout the process, I've never been made to feel awkward or uncomfortable.

Over the last two years, I have occasionally dropped by the Hitchin clinic with questions. Every visit has been met with a warm welcome, making me feel valued and respected. The care and service at The Hearing Clinic have been exceptional, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

“The pleasure of stress-free hearing is immense.”

Suffering from a recurrent buildup of ear wax, I attributed my struggle to catch words or hear against background noise to this. Each time my ears were cleared, my hearing seemingly improved, only to decline once more, which I always blamed on wax. The decline in clarity was so gradual that I rationalised the changes, telling myself it wasn't severe. Life's interruptions also delayed my regular wax removal routine, further procrastinating a proper hearing check.

Eventually, the struggle intensified. Conversations, particularly those from a distance or without visual cues, became challenging. Television and radio grew harder to hear; strangely, I could sometimes catch deeper sounds better from afar.

Apologies for not hearing became frequent, and deciphering spoken words turned into a mental task. This prompted me to finally book a wax removal appointment, followed by a much-needed hearing test.

Having had a bad experience with ear syringing elsewhere years ago, I chose The Hearing Clinic because of their gentle suction method and its convenient location within walking distance. My previous positive experiences left me with no reservations about returning for further care.

I initially chose The Hearing Clinic for wax removal, but the excellent service convinced me to continue. The suggestion of a friend, whose husband had successfully improved his hearing there, further solidified my decision.

The service exceeded my expectations from the moment of booking. The process was professional, swift, and supportive, with clear explanations at every step. After ear cleaning, the later multi-stage hearing test clearly showed my need for hearing aids, with understandable results even shared with my GP.

The improvement was immediate and striking. Suddenly, I realised the mental effort I'd been exerting to listen was unnecessary. The relaxation that followed was both mental and physical – during dinner with friends, they noticed the difference without me mentioning I had hearing aids fitted!

My voice and facial expression had relaxed visibly, and I now hear clearly in noisy environments without anxiety. Sounds are vibrant, with volumes I had forgotten, like pages turning in a book or the sound of birdsong.

My advice is to take the clinic's guidance and ask questions. Carefully consider their recommendations regarding hearing support; it can be life-changing!

The moment my hearing aids were fitted, I regretted not acting sooner. For the first time, everything was crystal clear – an 80 per cent improvement, according to my prescription.

Adjusting to hearing aids has been seamless, occasionally forgetting they're there. Despite the cost and the initial delay while sorting finances, they were worth every penny for the clarity and quality of life they provided. While handling them requires care, the benefits far outweigh any minor inconvenience.

I cannot thank The Hearing Clinic staff enough. I no longer frustrate myself or others by asking for repetitions or pretending to understand. The pleasure of stress-free hearing is immense!
