Could your brain soon control your hearing aid?

Have you ever stood at a busy party, surrounded by dozens of conversations, and still managed to follow what the person in front of you is saying? Scientists call this the ‘cocktail party effect’, and it’s something the human brain does remarkably well. Recreating that same trick in hearing technology has been one of audiology’s biggest, longest-running challenges — and a team at Columbia University in New York believes they’ve found a genuinely new way to solve it.

How it works

Led by Professor Nima Mesgarani at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute, with first author Dr Vishal Choudhari, the team has developed a system that reads brain activity to work out which conversation a person actually wants to listen to, then automatically boosts that one voice while suppressing everyone else’s. In effect, it’s trying to do electronically what your brain already does naturally when you focus your attention on a single speaker.

Putting it to the test

The system was tested using volunteers who already had brain electrodes fitted as part of their treatment for epilepsy, in collaboration with colleagues at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine and the University of California, San Francisco. Using real-time machine-learning algorithms, the system monitored the volunteers’ brainwaves to detect exactly which speaker they were paying attention to in a noisy, multi-talker environment, and adjusted the sound accordingly.

What the researchers found

The results, published in Nature Neuroscience in May 2026, showed the system could identify which conversation a person was focused on with high accuracy, dramatically improving speech intelligibility and reducing listening effort. Volunteers said they preferred the assisted conversations to the unassisted ones.

One participant put it simply: “It seems like science fiction.”

Not quite ready for your ear yet

This is still very early-stage research. The current system relies on brain electrodes implanted for an unrelated medical reason, so a version you could wear day to day, without surgery, is still some way off. But it points to a genuinely exciting future direction for hearing technology: rather than simply making everything louder, tomorrow’s hearing aids may work out what you want to hear, and prioritise it for you.

What’s already possible today

The good news is that you don’t have to wait for brain-controlled hearing aids to get real help with understanding speech in noisy places.
