How do hearing aids work?

Hearing aids use a microphone to convert sound waves to electrical signals which are sent to an amplifier. The power of the signals are increased by the amplifier which then sends them to the ear through a speaker.

What level of hearing loss requires a hearing aid?

Hearing loss is generally described by the following levels:

• Mild
• Moderate
• Severe
• Profound

Our audiologists will be able to tell you the level of your hearing loss and if you could benefit from a hearing aid. Don’t wait until your hearing gets really bad before coming to see us as the earlier you get a hearing aid, the more you’ll get out of it.

FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

QHow do you put hearing aids in?

AHow you insert and remove your hearing aids will depend on whether you have a hearing aid that fits behind your ear, or one that fits into your ear. We’ll show you how to insert your hearing aids and let you practice in the clinic until you’re happy that you know what you’re doing. It’s natural to find it a little fiddly to begin with, but you’ll soon be taking a matter of seconds to get your hearing aids in and out of your ears.

QHow do you fit hearing aids?

AIf we recommend that you should use hearing aids we will talk to you about the different options available for your lifestyle and level of hearing loss. Once you’re up and running with the right technology we will see you for regular reviews to ensure you’re getting the most out of your hearing aids.

QIs it OK to use only one hearing aid?

AIf you have hearing loss in only one ear, it’s natural to think that you only need a hearing aid for that ear. However, the latest digital hearing aids work together, so using a hearing aid in your good ear will pick up sound from different directions and stream it to the other hearing aid. As a result, you’ll hear significantly better.

If you have hearing loss in both ears then it is important to wear two hearing aids. Wearing one hearing aid may create a feeling of imbalance and hearing in noisy places like restaurants will be very difficult. Our brains are designed to receive sound from both ears enabling us to feel balanced and to know where sounds are coming from.

QWhat is the difference between a hearing aid and a hearing amplifier?

AA personal sound amplification product (PSAP) is a low cost device intended to simply make environmental sound louder, for example in a lecture hall or theatre. They aren’t selective about what sounds they amplify. A PSAP is not a replacement for a hearing aid.

In contrast, a hearing aid is tailored to the wearer and will boost certain frequencies of sound to enhance the wearer’s ability to hear. If you have any questions about the difference between PSAPs and hearing aids, please give us a call at The Hearing Clinic.

QWhy do hearing aids whistle?

AThere are various reasons why hearing aids may whistle occasionally. Below are the most common scenarios, and what you can do to resolve the issue:

  • Incorrect fitting: If your hearing aid isn’t in your ear properly it can cause feedback issues, including whistling. Check the hearing aids are in the correct ears or put the hearing aid further into your ear. Ensure they’re a snug fit. If they’re too loose they can also whistle.
  • Earwax: If your ear canal is blocked with wax build-up the sound will bounce back into your hearing aid, leading to whistling. We can remove any wax that’s in the way – just call us to book an appointment.
  • Damaged parts: If the tubes of your hearing aid are damaged this can create feedback. The extensive aftercare service offered by The Hearing Clinic means that your hearing aids should always be in great shape, but we can easily replace any parts of the devices that aren’t working.
  • Hugs and headwear: Wearing hats or scarves – even giving a friend or relative a hug – can alter the feedback path of your hearing aids. Turning down the volume on your hearing aids may help.

If you experience ongoing whistling or some other technical issue with your hearing aids, they may need replacing. Simply make an appointment with The Hearing Clinic. We’re here to help.
