Tre Lowe, The Apprentice and tinnitus

While Tre didn’t become Lord Sugar’s next business partner, there’s one thing he is boss of – his tinnitus!

Tre Lowe musician and finalist from the Apprentice

If you caught the last series of The Apprentice, which concluded in the spring, you’ll have seen musician and entrepreneur, Tre Lowe, make it through to the semi-final. While Tre didn’t become Lord Sugar’s next business partner, there’s one thing he is boss of – his tinnitus.

Tre has lived with tinnitus – a ringing, buzzing or roaring in the ears, which has no external source – since he was 15 and is keen to share his experience of the condition to help others.

Tre describes his multifrequency tinnitus as so loud, he “could hear it if I was standing on the edge of the M25.”

Building knowledge

As a musician and self-confessed “crazy noise addict”, Tre didn’t realise he was making his condition worse. He says, “There is a real lack of education out there about protecting your hearing and how it’s so easy to damage your ears. I wish I’d known that and that’s why I’m so passionate about getting the message out there. Everyone knows about the importance of looking after their eyes. The same applies to your ears. We should be looking after them in the same way.”

The tinnitus got so bad that, at one point, Tre felt he couldn’t go on. “I had to really train myself because I knew it was me creating the turmoil by focusing too much on it and giving it too much attention,” he remembers.

By educating himself on the physical and psychological aspects of tinnitus, and by using personification – giving his tinnitus a name – to create a necessary objectivity from the condition, Tre found a way through and learnt to reduce the severity of his reactions.
