It seems that not a month goes by now without a new app being launched to support deaf and hard of hearing people enjoy more accessible travel, take a more active part in public events, or receive better healthcare treatment.

The rise of artificial intelligence – or AI – has a lot to do with it. While many people have understandable concerns about the uses of AI, there are certainly many areas where it can be a major force for good.

Take a recently launched app called Signapse, which uses AI generated images to translate train announcements into British Sign Language (BSL). The photo realistic AI signer delivers information to BSL users on their mobile phones, enabling them to keep up to date with platform changes, delays and whatever else may be happening to their train service.

Signapse is currently being trialled by South Western Railway on services between Basingstoke, London, Salisbury and Exeter until March next year. It hopes to roll out the trial across most of its network.

The developers of Signapse have plans to introduce the app in all public places. After all, any written English information can be translated into British Sign Language and Signapse enables that translation through technology.
