Hyperacusis (Hypersensitivity to sounds)

Hyperacusis is the term used to describe intolerance of sound(s) that are normally tolerated by listeners with normal hearing. Children with hyperacusis may become very distressed by certain day to day sounds like hoovers, fireworks, hand dryers and tannoys.

This can have an effect on the wider family as routines and household chores often have to be rearranged to lessen the distress. At school, background noise can make concentration very difficult and may leave the child anxious and overwhelmed. Adult’s with hyperacusis may avoid noisy situations and become socially isolated. For some, the condition worsens at night causing severe sleep disturbances.

Although the condition is still quite elusive it can be managed with the use of sound therapy and counselling. Please contact The Hearing Clinic for more information or to book an appointment.
